Types of Disability Benefits Available to Veterans

As a result of the unique nature of disabilities, diseases, or injuries obtained while in active military service, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs offers compensation for those who were a part of this nation's Armed Forces.

Not only do these benefits pay out to Veterans, but spouses, dependent children, and dependent parents are covered in the instance of a military-service related injury or death.

Understanding Disability Compensation

If a Veteran obtained a disease or injury that was incurred on or aggravated by active military service, including those that related to or secondary to disabilities that occurred in service, the Veteran is eligible for disability compensation.

This is a monthly, tax-free benefit that affects Veterans who are at least 10% disabled by their service. Disability refers to both physical and mental conditions. Given the Veteran's degree of disability, the benefit amount will vary. If the Veteran has dependents and their disability rate is above 30%, additional funding can be provided.

Eligibility includes services in active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training, discharged with other than dishonorable conditions, and at least 10% disabled by the injury or disease.

Additional Benefits

Special Monthly Compensation is an additional benefit that can be paid if the Veteran needs special attention due to the need for aid from another person or has lost the use of a limb due to disability. These values vary depending on the need of aid and the children cared for by the Veteran.

Claims Based on Special Services is a service provided to further ease the burden placed on some Veterans. These benefits relate to those who obtained their injury in active service and include:

  • Title 38 U.S.C. 1151 Claims
  • Automobile Allowance
  • Birth Defects/Spina Bifida
  • Clothing Allowance
  • Convalescence
  • Dentistry
  • Hospitalization
  • Loss of Employability
  • Pre-stabilization
