Social Security Disability for Back Injuries & Pain

Need Help with Your Claim? Contact Our Plano SSD Attorneys Today!

Back injuries and chronic back pain are some of the most common conditions experienced by people throughout the U.S. Back pain, including chronic back pain, can be the result of a range of back and spine problems, such as scoliosis, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and more. When these and other back-related conditions are so severe, they render a person unable to work, it is possible to seek Social Security disability benefits.

Proving that your back injury is disabling can be difficult. While you may be in considerable pain, your condition is only considered a “disability” by the Social Security Administration if it meets the administration’s strict impairment listing standards.

If you need help filing a Social Security disability claim for back pain or a back injury, turn to the experienced legal team at Coats & Todd. With over 60 collective years in practice, our Plano Social Security disability lawyers can help you understand your legal options and assist in filing your claim. We have helped thousands of people throughout Texas successfully obtain Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and are ready to put our extensive knowledge and skill to work for you.

How Back Pain & Back Injury Claims Are Evaluated

When determining if your injury qualifies for Social Security disability, the Social Security Administration does not necessarily look at the type of back injury but, rather, at its severity and the limitations it places on the person’s life.

Generally speaking, in order for back pain or a back injury to be classified as a “disability” by the Social Security Administration, it must meet the following requirements:

  • The injury/pain is significant enough to cause the person to be unable to walk for more than about one block without needing to rest
  • The injury/pain prevents the person from lifting or carrying more than 10 pounds
  • The injury/pain prevents the person from being able to sit or stand for a period of at least two hours

Can I Get Social Security Disability for My Back Injury?

If you meet all eligibility requirements and your back injury is considered a “disability” according to the Social Security Administration, you should be eligible to obtain Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income.

Some common back injuries for which people are able to obtain Social Security disability include:

  • Scoliosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Arachnoiditis
  • Herniated/slipped discs
  • Spondylitis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Nerve compression

This is not a complete list of qualifying conditions, nor is it a guarantee that if you have one of these conditions, you will automatically get Social Security disability benefits. In fact, most initial Social Security disability claims are denied. However, if your claim is denied, that doesn’t mean you are ineligible to receive benefits; you can appeal your claim (and should do so) with the help of an attorney.
