Compassionate, Dedicated Veterans Benefits Attorneys

When you are applying for VA disability benefits, you must prove a service connection to your injury or illness. If you cannot, you will not be eligible for VA disability benefits. Our attorneys know how to gather the medical evidence necessary to establish your service connection, even if your condition is not diagnosed until after you leave the military.

At the Law Offices of Coats & Todd, we protect the rights of injured veterans in New Mexico and throughout the nation. We have attorneys who are accredited by the VA to handle your claim. PTSD, Brain Injuries and Agent Orange

Veterans are at risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because of their exposure to trauma while in military service. Approximately one-third of combat veterans suffer from PTSD. Individuals with PTSD may also have anxiety disorder and depression.

Military service is full of risks for traumatic brain injuries (TBI), such as explosions, artillery, IEDs and blows to the head. An accident in a military vehicle may also cause TBI. Symptoms may include amnesia, depression, dizziness, headaches or loss of consciousness. Motor skill function and speech may also be impaired.

Many veterans who served in the Vietnam War and were exposed to Agent Orange or other herbicides have suffered debilitating illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Because these diseases can be fatal, it is critical to get VA disability benefits for yourself and your family.

Types of VA Disability Benefits

VA disability benefits can include financial compensation and medical benefits. The amount of compensation you receive is largely based on the ratings decision you are given. The VA rates impairments on a disability scale of 10 percent to 100 percent. If your disability rating is too low, we can help you appeal the decision. If VA disability benefits are granted, but you do not agree with the effective date of your disability, you may appeal that as well.

Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for other benefits such as:

  • Vocational rehabilitation
  • Education and training assistance
  • Employment assistance
  • Total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU) compensation
